“Our Place in the Cosmos”, the third video from the Symphony of Science, was crafted using samples from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, Richard Dawkins’ Genius of Charles Darwin series, Dawkins’ TED Talk, Stephen Hawking’s Universe series, Michio Kaku’s interview on Physics and aliens, plus added visuals from Baraka, Koyaanisqatsi, History Channel’s Universe series, and IMAX Cosmic Voyage. The themes present in this song are intended to explore our understanding of our origins within the universe, and to challenge the commonplace notion that humans have a superior or privleged position, both on our home planet and in the universe itself.
With reference to Santa Claus, this essay raises the ethical question of whether it is okay to implant false beliefs in children. The essay also draws a comparison between Santa Claus and religious mythology.

On Monday 23rd November, Jay Sloss (Rangi Ruru), Michael Couch (University of Canterbury), Richard Tweedie (Hagley Community College), and Brent Silby (Unlimited PT) will be meeting to plan a series of Philosophy related events in 2010. These events will include symposiums, movie nights, cafe philosophy discussion groups, and a philosophy day for Christchurch City secondary school students. We look forward to promoting these events to all Philosophically minded people in Christchurch.
